The International Space Station awaits the docking of a new trio of Expedition 37 crew members and the arrival of Cygnus, Orbital Sciences’ first commercial cargo craft.
Soyuz Commander Oleg Kotov and Flight Engineers Mike Hopkins and Sergey Ryazanskiy are at the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan, counting down to their 4:58 p.m. EDT liftoff aboard a Soyuz TMA-10M spacecraft on Wednesday. They will complete the Expedition 37 crew when they dock to the Poisk mini-research module just four orbits later at 10:48 p.m.
Expedition 37 Commander Fyodor Yurchikhin and Flight Engineers Karen Nyberg and Luca Parmitano will welcome their new crewmates when they open the hatches at 12:25 a.m. Thursday. The current station residents have been aboard the space station since May 28 and are scheduled to return home Nov. 11.
Kotov, Hopkins and Ryazanskiy will remain in space inside the orbiting laboratory until March 2014. This is Kotov’s third mission to the station. Hopkins and Ryazanskiy are on their first mission.
There is a new commercial cargo craft heading towards the station. Orbital Sciences launched their Cygnus resupply ship Sept. 18 atop an Antares rocket. Its approach and rendezvous are scheduled for no earlier than Saturday. The Cygnus was originally scheduled to arrive at the space station Sunday morning, but a data format mismatch forced NASA and Orbital Sciences to uplink a software fix and replan its arrival.

A study by MARK KASSOF & CO. says that 53% of respondents among 18-64 radio listeners in the U.S. agree with the statement, “Radio isn’t as good as it used to be.” 41% disagree, and 6% don’t know.  61% of 18-34 year agree with the negative assessment, with only 31% disagreeing. Men are more negative than women, 18-34 men being the most negative (67%).  The study interviewed 989 respondents online SEPTEMBER 12th through 15th as part of KASSOF’s annual ListenerThink P1 research.
MARK KASSOF said, “The perception that radio isn’t as good as it used to be seems pervasive in the industry. This research reveals that a majority of listeners agree.”


Managers from Orbital Sciences and NASA decided Monday morning to postpone the approach, rendezvous, grapple and berthing operations of Orbital's Cygnus cargo logistics spacecraft with the International Space Station to no earlier than Saturday, Sept. 28. Cygnus' rendezvous now will follow the launch and arrival of three crew members of Expedition 37/38 on Wednesday, Sept. 25. Michael Hopkins of NASA and Oleg Kotov and Sergey Ryazanskiy of the Russian Federal Space Agency (Roscosmos) will depart from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan at 4:58 p.m. EDT and arrive at the space station at 10:47 p.m.
Orbital has confirmed that over the past 24 hours, the Orbital team developed and tested a software fix for the data format mismatch that necessitated a postponement of the first rendezvous operation that was scheduled for the early morning of Sunday, Sept. 22. However, that process, together with the impending Soyuz crew operations, resulted in a tight schedule to the point that both Orbital and NASA felt it was the right decision to postpone the Cygnus approach and rendezvous until after Soyuz operations.

PUBLICATIONS: Innovative approaches for investigating how children understand risk in new media (EU KIDS ONLINE)

Children’s rapid adoption of the internet and other online technologies, together with the constantly changing  media landscape (e.g. more apps and tailored sites, more individualized media use, more mobile internet), pose challenges to researchers concerning the difficult task of adapting and renewing their inventory of  research tools in order to identify the risks and opportunities presented by the internet and new media use. EU Kids Online II (2009-11) has offered a unique picture of a wide range of activities undertaken by European children online and the risks and benefits that accompany these activities. The pan-European survey offers valuable information on where, how and what children access online, what risks they encounter, what risks actually bother them, how they cope with problematic content or conduct and how effective parental strategies are in reducing such risks. It also demonstrates that “online opportunities and risks go hand in hand” (Livingstone et al., 2011: 142).

Children’s freely given, detailed accounts of how they understand online risks, and what they perceive as problematic or bothersome, are needed alongside quantitative data that mostly reflect adult perspectives on problematic online content and activities. The recent report, In their own words: What bothers children online? (Livingstone et al., 2013), analysed answers to an open survey question concerning what bothers children online. This arose out of data gathered for the EU Kids Online II study (2009-11). The current phase, EU Kids Online III (2011-14), promises a more thorough qualitative investigation into children’s understanding of online risks and opportunities.

Toy company abandons gendered marketing

In a positive move to promote gender equality from a young age, the toy retailer Toys R Us has pledged to no longer target certain toys specifically to boys or girls. The move follows lobbying by the consumer group Let Toys Be Toys to get the retailer to stop using gendered marketing, arguing that it can confuse the natural development of children. “Even in 2013, boys and girls are still growing up being told that certain toys are ‘for’ them, while others are not…,” said Megan Perryman, a campaigner for Let Toys Be Toys. “This is not only confusing but extremely limiting, as it strongly shapes their ideas about who they are and who they can go on to become.” Full story.

Meanwhile LEGO, which in the past has been criticised for playing into gender stereotypes and releasing mainly male-gendered figures, appears to have recognised that not just boys can be scientists by launching its first-ever female scientist toy. More on the story.  

Included in this progressive trend concerning gender is a “gender-bending” children's book that was launched in Latvia last year with the aim of promoting gender equality among children from a young age. The book aims to break gender stereotypes by having the main girl and boy characters switch bodies, with the aim of getting children to look at issues such as whether it is “appropriate for girls to play football, whether boys playing with dolls should feel ashamed, and whether all girls prefer pink clothes and boys go for dark outfits.” Latvia's ombudsman, Juris Jansons, expressed his support of the book saying it “defends a child's right to individuality and promotes a child's opportunity to develop his/her abilities regardless of gender.” The book is expected to be introduced into kindergartens in the near future. Full story

OPPORTUNITIES: Environmental essay competition launched [Worldwide

Anyone age 13 to 24 can participate in this contest.

The Save Food Initiative, a partnership between UNEP, FAO and Messe Düsseldorf, is seeking entries for its essay competition “Think.Eat.Save - My Effort to Reduce Foodprint.” The aim of the campaign is to raise awareness among youth of the problem of food waste.

Grand, first and second prize winners will receive a Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1, Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0 Wifi, and Samsung Galaxy Player 5.8 respectively.

Essays should be around 800 words, must be based on individual thoughts, experiences, achievements and future plans.

The deadline is Sept 30.

NEWS: OneMinutesJr featured at “International Crime and Punishment Film Festival” in Istanbul

Istanbul, TURKEY, 17 September 2013 - The OneMinutesJr project is featured at this week's International Crime and Punishment Film Festival (ICPFF) in Istanbul. 

50 films produced by teenagers in conflict with the law from Armenia, Azerbaijan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Ukraine will be shown as part of the official program of the international festival that lasts from 13-19 September.

NEWS: Time zone restrictions outdated in the digital world

THE watershed, that point in time when television networks can switch from broadcasting safe, family friendly content to programs containing adult themes, is under threat from free-to-air stations keen to remove time restrictions they consider outdated.

Free TV, the network's peak body, has made a submission to the Australian Communications and Media Authority calling for the ban on adult content in certain time zones to be removed or relaxed, allowing networks to screen more risqué programs before 8.30pm.

OPPORTUNITIES: New course in New Media - call for applications (SOUTH CAUCASUS)

GO Group Media and Prague-based organization Transitions Online are inviting applications from young practicing journalists and journalism students from across the South Caucasus for an opportunity to be trained to use new media tools to produce impactful journalism.

Over the next ten months, the participants of the project 'Empowering Journalists to Promote Reconciliation in the South Caucasus’ will engage in the production of short multimedia featuring stories of lived experience told by their fellow community members.

Every participant will be presented with a smartphone for their filming sessions. Later on, trainees who will have demonstrated the greatest potential as learners will be rewarded with a chance to participate in an International Photojournalism Course in Prague.

'Grab your camera and focus on things you can't buy with money.' In the spring of 2013, well-known photographer Stephen Freiheit gave this mission to young artists in Bangladesh, Nepal and Myanmar. After having spread his message through the Myanmar Times, Burma's largest weekly, the Nepalese newspaper Rep├║blica, television channel NTV and the youth organisation Today's Youth Asia, Stephen received photographs from hundreds of young people exploring their growing democracies from within. Today almost 100 art pieces portraying everyday life in the midst of material poverty and political instability are exhibited in Denmark, a country where one of the most prominent political economic debates during the financial crisis concerned whether or not they should lower the price on candy.

New perspective

The 'things you can't buy with money' photography exhibition is part of Images Festival, a Danish art festival which displays contemporary art from developing countries. By showing the art of strong-voiced rappers, photographs, movie-makers, musicians and many more, the festival seeks to create a space for immersion, dialogue, celebration and artistic meetings, and to open the eyes of the Danes to life in developing countries. However, its focus is not typical.

We're looking for ideas - not videos themselves. The winning idea will be created into a video by UNICEF - similar to these. This video will be used by UNICEF and its partners to advocate for smart and safe use of the internet among young people, and the winner's name will be included in the video credit and in the media buzz that we'll create.

NEWS: Stop wasting time on the Net, youth told (THAILAND)

A new bill aimed at encouraging youngsters to opt for appropriate media content will be discussed at a preliminary hearing next week, a senior Culture Ministry official said yesterday.

He was speaking at a four-day seminar, which wraps up on Thursday, at which 120 students from 10 Bangkok-based schools were present. The seminar is part of a ministry project to discuss social media and freedom of speech with the youth. 

Apinan Poshyananda, Culture Ministry's deputy permanent secretary, explained that the "safe and constructive media bill" would cover films, television shows, games as well as karaoke as he cited a recent survey showing that Thai students spent up to eight hours a day surfing the Net or chatting with their friends. He said these chats or time spent on the Net were mostly unrelated to schoolwork.
